Harnessing the power of your menstrual cycle

Understanding your hormonal phases to nurture your wellbeing
The menstrual cycle. We’re taught the basics in school, but for so many of us, it remains a mystery—a monthly inconvenience at best, something to endure in silence at worst. But what if I told you that your menstrual cycle holds immense potential? That it can be a powerful tool to help you thrive, if only you understood and harnessed its rhythms? Inspired by the work of Lucy Peach, menstrual cycle educator and author of Period Queen, I want to invite you to reclaim your cycle and use it to support and nurture your wellbeing.

How does it work?

My Bleeding Bracelet is worn from when you feel like you enter the “take phase”. Aka that period of time before your bleed where energy is low, hormones are high and self care and rest is a full body must! For most people, this will feel like from around 4 to 2 days before you start bleeding. It is a powerful symbol to your loved ones, and those that you wish to share with, that you’re bleeding. By wearing your bracelet you are honouring yourself and asking for the care you deserve, guilt-free.

You’re building kinship and community around your menstrual cycle, removing the shame and deservedly replenishing your energy.

The four phases of your cycle

If you’re like most women, you might not have thought much about the different phases of your cycle beyond knowing when your period starts and when it ends. However, your menstrual cycle is divided into four distinct phases: the menstrual, follicular, ovulatory, and luteal phases. Each of these phases is marked by hormonal shifts that can influence your energy levels, mood, productivity, and even your creativity.
Lucy Peach guarantees that if you can come to understand how marvellous you are in each distinct phase, you will develop “cycle superpowers” that help you in understanding how to make the most of every week, whether you’re resting, creating, connecting, or nurturing.

Dream: Menstruation (Day 1-5ish)

Let’s start with the menstrual phase—the days of bleeding - what Lucy Peach refers to as Dream. This is the part of the cycle that’s most familiar to us, but it’s also the phase that can be the most misunderstood.
Physically, your hormone levels—estrogen and progesterone—are at their lowest during this phase. As a result, you may feel tired, less focused, or more withdrawn. Instead of seeing this as a weakness, you can reframe this time as a powerful opportunity for rest and reflection. Your body is shedding the uterine lining it’s been building, and it’s a time to slow down, nurture yourself, and listen to your body’s needs and your intuition.
In our go-go-go culture, the idea of rest can seem indulgent or even impossible, but this phase is crucial for renewing your energy for the rest of the month. Surrender. Take this time to journal, meditate, or engage in gentle movement like breathwork, yoga or stretching. This is also an excellent time for self-compassion. If your body is telling you to take it easy, we want to honour our body’s wisdom (our instinct). And remember, tuning into your body will help you honour what you need on each day of your period as your needs will be different from day one through to five, and also unique from other women’s needs.
Superpower: Rest, Renewal and Nourishment.
This is your chance to replenish your energy, tune into your intuition, and take notice of how you’re feeling. Use this time to dream about the month ahead, but don’t push yourself too hard. Remember, this is your moment to cocoon and regenerate. The more you care for yourself while you bleed, the easier the next phases will be.

Do: Follicular (Day 6-13ish)

As you move out of menstruation and into the Do phase, your energy starts to rise. Your body is preparing for ovulation, and estrogen begins to increase, bringing with it a surge in creativity, motivation, and confidence. This is the phase where you feel most capable of taking on the world, and it’s the ideal time to start new projects, set goals, and engage in activities that require mental focus and drive. This is the time to Do.
During this phase, your brain is primed for problem-solving and innovation. It’s an epic time to tackle challenging tasks at work, begin creative projects, or dive into activities that require analytical thinking. It’s a time of growth and renewal.
Physically, you may notice an increase in energy and vitality, so it’s also a great time to ramp up your exercise routine or try new physical activities. Your body is ready to move, and your mind is clear and focused. The Do phase is all about momentum, so ride the wave!
Superpower: creativity and growth
Embrace the rising energy of this phase to fuel your personal and professional pursuits. Whether it’s starting a new hobby, brainstorming fresh ideas, or setting ambitious goals, this is the time when your mind and body are in sync for growth and innovation. It’s time to Do!

Give: Ovulation (Day 14-20ish)

Ovulation marks the midpoint of your cycle and is often seen as the “climax” of the month. Your body is releasing an egg, and hormonally, you’re at your peak. Estrogen levels are high, and a burst of luteinising hormone helps the egg to release. Testosterone also rises during this time, boosting your libido and confidence.
This phase is the perfect time for social activities, networking, or anything that involves collaboration and giving into joy. You’re naturally more magnetic, communicative, and open to connection. During Give you feel most powerful, capable, and charming.
However, it’s not just your social life that benefits from this phase—this is also the time when your cognitive abilities are heightened. Your brain is firing on all cylinders, and you may notice increased mental sharpness, verbal fluency, and the ability to think on your feet. This is the time to present ideas, have important conversations, or tackle complex tasks with confidence.
Superpower: connection and confidence
This is your moment to shine. Use this phase to connect with others, speak up about things you care about, or put yourself out there in any way that feels right for you. You’re at your most magnetic and self-assured, so let yourself bask in that energy.

Take: Luteal (Day 21-28 ish/day before you bleed)

After ovulation, your body shifts into the luteal phase. Progesterone rises to support the possibility of pregnancy, and estrogen levels slowly start to decrease. Many women find that their energy starts to taper off during this phase, and they may feel more introspective or emotional. This is a time when it’s easy to be hard on yourself, but Lucy Peach reminds us that this phase, too, is a superpower.
Rather than seeing the luteal phase as a time of “PMS symptoms” to dread, embrace the increased sensitivity and intuition that comes with this time. You’re more in tune with your emotions and your body, and it’s an excellent time to reflect on what’s working in your life and what’s not.
This phase is also a great time for finishing projects, tying up loose ends, and preparing for the upcoming menstruation phase. While you may not have the boundless energy of the Do and Give phases, you have a grounded, steady focus that’s perfect for completing tasks and organising your life.
Superpower: reflection and sensitivity
In the Take phase, your heightened emotional awareness can be a gift. Use this time to reflect on what’s coming up for you emotionally and mentally and adjust your life where necessary. It’s a time for gentle productivity, not pushing yourself beyond your limits. It’s a time to prepare yourself for the start of a new cycle.

Embrace your cycle and rediscover your power

Your cycle is not something to be endured—it’s something to be celebrated and embraced. Each phase brings its own strengths, and when you tune into these rhythms, you can align your life with your body’s natural energy.
Instead of viewing your cycle as a linear process, think of it as a circle—a continuous flow that moves from rest to growth to connection to reflection. By honouring each phase for what it offers, you can create a life that feels more balanced, harmonious, and in tune with your natural rhythms.
So, the next time your period comes around, instead of dreading it, try to see it as the start of a new cycle—a time for rest, renewal, and self-compassion. And as you move through each phase - Dream, Do, Give and Take - remember that your body is giving you signals about what it needs and what you’re capable of in that moment.
Your menstrual cycle doesn’t have to be something to fight against—it can be a powerful guide that can help you thrive in every area of your life.
